SPS

SPS

Small Polyp Stony corals tend to be more challenging to keep than other coral varieties, but the intricate growth patterns and incomparable colors make them extremely rewarding for the dedicated hobbyist. The majority of SPS will thrive under intense light and strong water flow conditions, though certain species may prefer slight variations. Excellent water quality is paramount to successfully growing SPS, and most will show their full potential with zero nitrate levels, 8-10dKH, 400-450ppm calcium, and 1380-1500ppm magnesium. Most SPS feed more aggressively than LPS relative to their polyp size, and will eagerly accept small food items such as oyster eggs and rotifers. Some of the more familiar SPS genera include: Acropora, Montipora, Seriatopora, Stylophora, Porites, and Pocillopora.

All SPS are “What You See Is What You Get.” Photos are taken under 14,000 or 20,000K halides unless otherwise noted. The color of any coral may vary under different lighting arrangements.
